About Vectra
Vectra AI is a cyber security company based in San Jose, CA. It is revolutionizing the security industry by answering the existential question any established organization has: How to find attackers who are already inside the defensive network perimeter before they can do real damage? Vectra stops network attacks before they become news stories. The product combines security research, machine learning, and simple, clean user experience, to create a powerful effective weapon against cyber attacks.

My Role
As the Director of User Experience, I grew and led the design team at Vectra comprising of interaction designers, visual designers, and contractors. I was responsible for setting the UX direction for the company's products, and forging durable relationships with customers to gather feedback early and often. I closely worked with other designers, engineers, product managers and scientists to deliver designs for new functionality, always with the end user's experience in mind.

The End Product
Screens of the security product I worked on as it looked when I left the company:
Why is UX so important in security?
The truth is, there simply aren't enough good guys who understand the ins-and-outs of security to combat all the bad guys in security. Enterprises are finding it extremely difficult to hire the right talent to keep their networks safe from the goons. Also, majority of the security products out there tend to bury the already overworked security teams under hundreds (or thousands) of alerts each day making it impossible to focus on the real threats.
By focusing on UX at Vectra, we created a product that is easy for even an unskilled security analyst to use, and thereby protect her organization's network from attackers. In fact, many of our customers successfully used interns to monitor their security breaches in Vectra!
We took great care in crafting the UI, navigation, and user flows in the product so the most important, relevant and actionable threat naturally bubbled up to the top. The architecture of the UI is such that the older or less relevant information decays over time so it doesn't distract from the real and immediate threats.
User-centered product design, as it turns out, has been extremely important for the success of Vectra in the security market, and I have been fortunate to play a central role incorporating it into the development process.
